2012 Farm Journal

January: We've been looking through the seed catalogs, making lists, talking about this year and what we'd like to try or do differently. This year Pete & Steve (family friend) are going to try their hands at growing mushrooms. They attended a conference last spring and are ready to try it this spring! We are planning on downsizing the rabbitry and only keeping a trio of rabbits and maybe increasing the laying hen flock a little bit. Perhaps we'll try our hand at both meat birds and turkeys this year... as well as a couple of pigs again! I LOVE shopping in our freezer and pantry! It's A LOT OF WORK spring to fall, but now that we are in the deep freeze of winter, it was so worth it!

February:  Seeds ordered the end of the month....

March:  And, seeds arrived! We have the asparagas crowns in the fridge awaiting early May to be planted! We did sell and move out Lucy and Charlie... so now we are down to 3 does and 1 buck in the rabbit barn! I did order 6 auracana chickens! I'm excited to have blue eggs mixed in with the brown ones again!

April:  April 7th we bred Sweet Pea... She's a first time mom in the rabbit hutch and the only one we've bred so far this year. Hopefully, between May 6-8th we'll have new babies to share! April 21st we had a Mushroom Inoculating Party! We had fun with family & friends who came to help us with the Shitakee mushroom spawn and 213 logs!! It won't be until NEXT spring that we'll see the fruit of this labor, but the one log Pete brought back from the seminar should be bursting out with mushrooms soon! AND... I noticed yesterday that the kale is making a come back! The winter temperatures didn't kill it all off this year! :) I actually moved an OLD rustic little potbelly woodstove from the lawn to the flower garden. I know, kinda silly, but I think it will be fun to have sweet peas growing out the top of it and onto a a pretty trellis and then to have some wave petunias coming out and trailing down from the little front door! Don't you agree? I'll add pictures when it starts to grow! :)
